Sleep Studies

What is a Sleep Study?
A sleep study, also known as polysomnography, is a non-invasive, overnight exam that monitors your sleep to identify potential sleep disorders. During the study, we record brain waves, oxygen levels, heart rate and rhythm, breathing patterns, and eye and leg movements.
We use adhesive sensors to collect data—nothing painful. If you have an allergy to adhesives, please inform your sleep technologist. You will
not be restrained, and our team ensures the monitoring equipment is as comfortable as possible. If you need to get up during the night, you
can be quickly disconnected for a bathroom break.
The sleep center is designed to be comfortable and secure, with rooms that resemble a home environment to help you feel at ease.

How to prepare for your sleep study:

  • Adjust Your Schedule: On the day of your study, wake up slightly earlier than usual to ensure you are naturally tired by bedtime.
    Avoid napping that day.
  • Limit Stimulants: Refrain from consuming caffeine or other stimulants in the afternoon and evening. Avoid alcohol as well.
  • Hygiene and Grooming: Shower and wash your hair before the study, as small sensors will be applied to your scalp.
    • Avoid using hair gels, sprays, or treatments.
    • Do not wear a wig or hairpiece, as they can interfere with the sensors.
    • Refrain from using lotions or oils on your skin, as these can affect sensor adhesion.
  • Nail Care: Ensure both index fingernails are clean and free of polish, artificial nails, or acrylic gel—this is very important.
  • Medications: Bring any evening medications you routinely take, including sleeping aids. Take them after meeting your sleep
    technologist.
  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing such as gym shorts, lounge pants, a T-shirt, or pajamas.
  • Personal Items:
    • Bring your favorite pillow if it helps you sleep better.
    • Pack an overnight bag with pajamas, toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, comb/brush, etc.), and any personal necessities.
  • CPAP/BiPAP Users: If you are undergoing a CPAP or BiPAP study, bring the mask you currently use.
  • Special Needs: If you require assistance or need a family member to stay with you, inform your sleep technologist upon arrival

Once you start your sleep study:
Limit Screen Time: Avoid using your phone or tablet. The goal is to sleep, not stay awake.
Comfort: The sleep center provides fans and extra blankets upon request.
If you need anything, let your sleep technologist know—they are there to assist you.

On Awakening:
If you need to wake up before 5:00 AM, please inform your sleep technologist. In the morning, the sensors will be removed, and you may
freshen up before heading home or going to work. Some patients may need to stay for additional daytime testing—your provider will inform
you if this applies to you.

After the Sleep Study:
The adhesive residue from the sensors will wash off easily. The collected data will be analyzed by sleep specialists, and a detailed report will
be prepared. Your provider will discuss the results with you at your follow-up appointment and recommend any necessary treatments.
If you do not have a follow-up appointment scheduled, please let your sleep technologist know so they
can notify your provider’s team. You may also call 912-629-2290 (select the option to schedule an
